Solid Brass Quintet

Location: Based in Cape Town

Biography

The Solid Brass Quintet combines a freshness of spirit, musicality and advanced virtuosity to liven up any occasion; be it a wedding reception, anniversary, birthday party, company launch.

Consisting of the principal players of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, the ensemble was formed in 1986 and has since then evolved into one of the biggest names in the South African brass fraternity. The group performs regularly across South Africa, and has also performed internationally in Taiwan, Norway, and in the USA.
Apart from performing at concerts and events, the SBQ also provides lecture demonstrations and has made various television appearances.

Music education has been an integral part of the quintet, evident in their involvement in the annual National Brass Congress, a week-long seminar which has been an important part of the music education of hundreds of South African brass players for over a decade. In addition, SBQ has been very involved in the Genesis Project, a community based music education project designed to "teach the teacher" and, thus, to encourage the development of self-sustaining music projects in areas unaccustomed to this advantage.
