Shanty has been in existence for many years, and is the leading exponent of traditional Irish music in Cape Town. The band performs a variety of folk music from other English-speaking countries, and the members also write their own material.
The name Shanty is derived from the Irish gaelic "sean-tigh", meaning "old house". Early Irish immigrants to America (like the Kennedys) lived in the old parts of towns such as Boston, and so became known as "shanty-dwellers".

Members
The band members are:
- Dave Williams - fiddle, mandolin, vocals
- Rob Anderson - vocals, mandolin, guitar, and bodhran (traditional Irish drum)
- John Bolton - vocals, pennywhistles, bodgran and keyboard
- Larry Margolis - guitar, vocals, harmonica
