Since its inception in 2003, The Mzansi Youth Choir has built up a national and international profile and is regarded as one of the best show choirs in the South Africa.
Consisting of 45 choristers from Soweto and other areas in and around Johannesburg, the choir was established with the aim of affording talented, underprivileged teenagers and young adults (14-24 years) the opportunity to proficiently perform locally and abroad. The word Mzansi means "south" in isiZulu, and is also the township slang word for "South Africa".
The Mzansi Youth Choir regularly hosts, and performs with, visiting international choirs. Collaborations include the Tuscon Boys Choir (Arizona, USA), Kokopelli Youth Choir (Edmonton, Canada); Radcliffe Choral Society Girl’s Choir from Harvard University (Boston, USA), Leuvens Meisjeskoor (Leuven, Belgium), Morehouse College Choir (Atlanta, USA) St Albans National Cathedral Choir (Washington DC, USA), Papaya (Copenhagen, Denmark) and G Stimmt (Salzburg, Austria).
The choir's repertoire is an exciting assortment of South African music which incorporates elements of traditional music, pop and jazz. Mzansi’s unique pulsating energy, buoyancy, vibrancy and devotion to South African music is an experience not to be missed.
South African Noteworthy Performances
Performance highlights include:
- During the 2010 FIFA World Cup the choir shared the stage with Columbian superstar Shakira and local band Freshlyground for the performance of the official World Cup song Waka Waka at the Kick-Off Concert and the World Cup Final.
- TV commercials, most notably Naija Sings (M-NET Africa) and a montage for the FIFA World Cup (ESPN/American Broadcasting Corporation).
