Gary Hendrickse Jazz Band

Biography

Formely known as South Easter Band, the Gary Hendrickse Jazz Band is made up of some of Cape Town's Jazz legends. The full band (4-piece) consists of piano, bass drums & vocals, and can be downsized to smaller groups (trio or duo).

The band is fronted by pianist Gary Hendrickse, who gained experience in his early years playing with local dance bands from the Cape Flats and District 6. He eventually studied Jazz Berkley College of Music, Boston, USA, and classical piano studies at the University of Cape Town. Gary is known for his "truly Cape Town" style of Jazz playning, and continues to play local music in addition to the wide repertoire he has at his disposal.

The band has an extensive repertoire to suit all tastes, and are capable of providing the perfect entertainment (from soft background music to dance music) for any occasion. The repertoire includes a wealth of jazz standards, as well as a wide variety of dance music styles such as rock 'n roll, Latin, Cape Malay, music for Jewish weddings, waltzes, sambas etc. They also play Italian music, French and Portuguese, as well as traditional Xhosa songs which is very popular amongst international crowds.

Members

Gary Hendrickse (piano)

Gary has over 40 years experience as a musician. He studied Classical piano at UCT and Jazz studies at the Berklee College of Music, Boston USA. He has perfomed at high profile functions for Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Bill Gates and Thabo Mbeki.

Gary Kriel (bass)

Gary Kriel has over 40 years experience. He has performed all over South Africa and in the neighbouring states. He spent a number of years on cruise liners travelling along the coast of North America, and has performed in New Orleans.

Danny Butler (drums and vocals)

Danny is a member of the musical Butler family and is Jonathan Butler's older brother. He took a lead part in David Kramer & Taliep Petersen's "Katz and the Kings," The film version of "District Six The Musical" and "Goema." He has performed in shows travelling to London,Germany and Las Vegas.

Soi Soi Gqeza (vocals)

Soi Soi joins the band as female vocalist when required. She has worked with Ray Phiri, Brenda Fasi and Hotstix Mabusa. She sings comfortably in both English and Xhosa, and has has performed in Europe, spending a a year performing in Spain.
