AfroTropica

AfroTropica is a colourful Cape Town based steel band, playing a vibrant repetoire of African, Caribbean and Jazz tunes. The instrumentation is dominated by the steelpan, which originated on the island of Trinidad in the 1940s, and is also augmented with percussion or drumkit. On occasion, Kenny Gibe, one of the band's lead pan players, also joins in on guitar.  Run by David Wickham, AfroTropica is the professional outfit connected to the Steelband Project, a Western Cape educational music initiative.

The band is ideally suited for creating a festive atmosphere at anything from a small cocktail party or themed event, to a wedding or corporate funnction. They have performed at numerous high-profile functions for parliamentarians, diplomats and have worked as resident artist at the Table Bay Hotel, Ratanga Junction and Moyo Restaurant at Spier Wine Estate.

AfroTropica ranges from a duo to a ten-piece, depending on the occasion and venue size.
