Abakhaya
Location: Based in Cape TownBiography

Abakhaya, in Xhosa meaning 'the ones from the homestead', was formed in 1998 in Cape Town. The members had substantial experience performing with various bands playing different styles, before forming Abakhaya. This contributed greatly to the group's unique sound.
The music of Abakhaya is truly distinctive and highly entertaining to a broad audience. The band plays high energy marimba and percussion in African style, yet their repertoire consists of tunes from Verdi to Miriam Makeba. Abakhaya has set the marimba free from its traditional chains by combining traditional African music with modern pop and jazz sounds. The band ordinarily consists of 7 members (Zwai Mbula, Thando Mafeje, Onkie Mcoseli, Siya Nomtshongwana, Lundile Qalinge, Raymond Boqwana, Vuyisile Hlaka) with 5 members on instruments and 2 trained opera singers.
Evidence of Abakhaya’s uniqueness is easily found in the success it has found on a world stage (they have even shared the stage with Lionel Richie in Cannes, France; along with other high profile international performers). The band has played in various countries representing Cape Town and South Africa in exemplary fashion. Locally the band performs at various events, from functions and weddings to corporate showcases and fesitvals.
